- Location: Fort Worth, Texas, United States
Belkis was born in Guantánamo, Cuba. She studied Humanities in la Universidad de Oriente. In 1967 she married Cuban poet Heberto Padilla. Though initially a supporter of the Castro Revolution, Belkis later became a censor critic of his regime. She was jailed with Padilla in 1971 charged with "subversive writing", It was known later as the "Padilla affair". She went into exile in the United States with her little son in 1979, until the Cuban goverment authorized him to leave Cuba. She founded Linden Lane Magazine, a review of Latin American and North American writers in 1982. And in 1996, La Casa Azul. Libros publicados: El viento en la pared,1962. Los alucinados,1963. Do I believe he is alive? Most definitely. Did he have to separate the legend from the man? Withouot a doubt. Why is not important. Though I would love to have a conversation with him the more important thing to me is that he was able to get away and life his life and perhaps final find some peace.

Hi Belkis,
Just wanted to say ty for the wonderful article. Many years ago, sadness filled my heart.... E was gone. I stumbled upon many articles, and yours was enlightening. Once again, we can believe, if only for a moment "is it really him".
It is not often that John is on line singing. My greatest wish was to hear him sing, once, fortunately I was able to hear him sing a few times, which warmed my heart. When you hear John sing for the first time, you can't believe your ears, you become mesmerized, I was speechless...
didn't know what to say, and couldn't move or rather, didn't want to move for fear of missing something. As the initial shock wore off, you become entranced, you return, over and over with hopes of hearing him sing again.
John, I have listened to many men who have tried to sing Elvis's music, you by far are the best. If you are not him, I am amazed by your talent, one which only one other was capable E, himself. I wish you the best in life. I thank you for your kindness, and the beauty of music you have given back what we believed was lost.
